In September of 1969 Harold Legaux Sr., along with his wife Belle, opened Harold and Belle's. It had been a dream of Harold's to have a place where friends from home (New Orleans) would gather, talk over old times, shoot pool, and socialize. His kitchen was small and the menu was simple. It featured Po-Boy Sandwiches, Red Beans and Rice, and File Gumbo served only on Friday.
After the passing of Harold Sr. in 1979, Harold Jr. and his wife Denise took over the full operation of the restaurant. Unlike his father who enjoyed the pool playing, and bar atmosphere, the younger Harold preferred a finer dining environment with linen tablecloths and candlelight. Having a passion for cooking, Harold Jr. introduced several new items to the menu including Shrimp Scampi, Shrimp Creole, Crawfish Etouffee, and Clam Chowder. He even offered Gumbo every day.
In 1984, Harold and Denise brought in partners Al and Sue Honore. Together they expanded the restaurant from 12 dining tables to 35 dining tables, and the kitchen has tripled in size. In 2002 Ryan Legaux, the son of Harold Jr., returned to the restaurant to work full time and is now General Manager. Together they are involved with the daily operations and have taken Harold and Belle's above and beyond Harold Sr.'s original dream.

In 1968, the indomitable Donald Coley migrated to Brooklyn, New York, filled with flaming enthusiasm and enervated with faith in his future. He had spent his life in Jamaica pursuing various occupations but always cherished the dream to operate his own business. After acquiring multiple skills in Brooklyn, Donald moved to California in 1980. It was in Los Angeles that he realized that it was time to implement his dream. He saw the need for a fine Jamaican restaurant, one that would serve authentic Jamaican cuisine in a relaxing Caribbean atmosphere. Coley's restaurant was enthusiastically received and the customer base expanded rapidly. There was an ever-increasing demand for the unique, flavorful Jamaican cuisine that was served daily at the restaurant and through their popular catering services. Through personal references and promotions, and increased interest in traveling to Jamaica, people came from all over Southern California--even from as far away as San Diego--to enjoy traditional specialties such as escoveitched fish, curried goat, curried chicken, jerk chicken, oxtail, meat patties, fried plantain, festival bread, tropical beverages, and desserts succulently prepared to satisfy the heartiest of appetites. Coley's features a daily lunch buffet, Friday night dinner buffet, and a special champagne brunch. Donald and his wife Audrey believe that only the best is good enough for their customers, and they spend much time in planning and developing a culinary mosaic of exquisite Jamaican fare that many have imitated but have failed to duplicate.
